Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Admittedly, my musical tastes tend to be eclectic and favor indie groups. Though Clap Your Hands Say Yeah enjoys a cult following among indie lovers, they haven't exactly enjoyed heavy commercial rotation (though, I'd like to note that the show was sold out!).

Finding someone to accompany me on my pilgrimage to the city was no easy task: it was a week night, no one had heard of the band, and well, no one had heard of the band.

My friend and neighbor, Heidi, ever-obliging, humored me by agreeing to accompany me; after all, it was a night out without children.

Heidi and I had dinner at Serendipity 3 and gorged ourselves on 'Can't Say No Sundae' and frozen hot chocolate. We did eat otherwise healthy food, but the dessert alone is noteworthy.

After dinner, we drove to the lower east side to the venue. Initially, Heidi and I were concerned that we would be the anomalies in the crowd, but we were pleased to find a diverse mix of CYHSY fans: college students (easy to identify as they were stick thin and drinking cheap beer), 30's crowd (us included, who were easy to identify as we/they bemusedly watched the inebriated college students throwing back cheap beer, smug with the knowledge that their waif-like figures will fall victim to sluggish metabolisms and childbirth), and oddly enough, a handful middle-aged of concert goers. Apparently, CYHSY appeal transcends all demographics.

After enduring two opening bands, both decent but quirky, CYHSY took the stage at 11:00 PM. Eleven o'clock in the evening was not an unheard of time to be heading out the door for a night of semi-debauchery as a college student, but as a wife and mother, 11:00 PM usually marks the second hour of my sleep.

CYHSY didn't disappoint. They even opened with my favorite song, truly serendipitous!
