While I was traveling with my sister-in-law, J accompanied the kiddos on the Sankt Martin's procession through our village. Last year, the festivities were new to me and I was unsure as to how the events of the evening would unfurl. This year, we were more prepared: all of the kiddos made lanterns from their own patterns which admittedly weren't as elaborate as their German counterparts but were expressive in terms of the kiddos' individual tastes. Littlest made a unicorn complete with a curly ribbon tail (J's idea) and lots of glittery glue locks! J took one for the team and drank an unspeakably large icy drink in order to get the domed lid which was needed to make Log's R2D2 lantern. Bop chose to make E.T. complete with an illuminated finger!
The videos are rather dark, but they should still give a general idea about the festivities. Below, villagers lining up in front of the Kindergarten where the procession began before following the Rhein and looping back around. The village really lends itself fully to celebrations (especially when an aspect of the celebration focuses on children).
The 'Knight' with lots of twinkling lanterns following behind.
After the procession completes its route, all of the children return to the Kindergarten where they sing songs around a bonfire, eat warm gingerbread and Wuerstchen, and play.
