The past several evenings, the kiddos and I have walked to the canal, down to the Rhein, and round home again. This evening, we discovered that chestnut trees line the walkway on the embankment following along the canal. We set about scouring the ground for fallen chestnuts.
As the trees are near to the water's edge, many chestnuts had fallen into the water. We found two trees that had rocks at their bases which harbored fallen nuts. Log examined the branches to look for 'hatching' chestnuts. Bop, if she was able, shook branches while Matty and Littlest padded along looking for the fallen booty or 'chetnuts' as Littlest said. Other passersby joined in the search and stuffed the offerings into pockets and purses.
An 'unhatched' chestnut. The trees are laden with many more like this.
Bounty! We found 108 chestnuts this evening. I plan to score them, roast a few, and try my hand at a stuffing.
Bop acted as quality control; any nut with a blemish did not make it into the stash bag.
