Berchtesgaden, Germany

Another stop:  Berchtesgaden.  This visit to the Kehlsteinhaus, or the Eagle's Nest, was the best we've had.  The weather was clear, and one could clearly see the surrounding area.  We ended up being the only members of a guided tour (maybe the kiddos scared off others who were interested) and had a private elevator ride up to the house!

Looking up to the house from the tunnel's entrance

We were the only ones in the tunnel, too!

Lunch in the restaurant.  I think my kiddos had schnitzel for three days running.

The large fireplace in the house; look closely and you can see where GIs carved their names into the marble when they took the house in 1945.

After getting an ice cream cone, we hiked up to the top of the mountain overlooking the house.

After coming down the mountain, we toured part of the bunker system at the Hotel zum Turken.  The bunkers were cold and had an eerie feeling about them.  The proprietor allowed us to remain parked there while we hiked to the site of Hitler's Berghof.  All that remains is one retaining wall.

The kiddos looked for edelweis on the site.
