Today was the last day of the new calf's birthday celebration. The kiddos had their faces painted, made several walrus-themed crafts, listened to walrus stories, and danced to every song ever sung that features the word 'baby.'
Unbelievably, the children sat with statue -like stillness as artists painted their faces. The children were not allowed to request specific sea creatures to be painted on their faces; rather, the artists were autonomous and painted what they liked within a sea creature theme. Bop was an unidentifiable sea creature and was quite disturbed that she looked clownish. I thought she looked like one of the Thundercats, though I don't recall a sea faring one. Log was made up like a man-eating shark. As a result, he bared his teeth and roared the rest of the day scaring several other children with his ferocity. Littlest had two goldfish, one on each cheek, and a sun painted on her face.
In spite of the walrus jubilee (or perhaps because of it), the calf was a bit timid and only surfaced once with his mother during our time at the exhibit. Though the calf was a bit shy, seeing him (albeit briefly) was Bop's favorite part of the day. Log enjoyed the shark exhibit, and littlest was captivated by the jellyfish.
After getting our fill of sea creatures, the kiddos and I headed to the Coney Island boardwalk for lunch, salt water taffy, and a stroll on the beach.
