We are officially booked and leaving for our Russian holiday next weekend! We will be routed through Warsaw, Poland to St. Petersburg.
J and I have researched points of interest in the city and are thrilled at the prospect of bearing witness to the city's rich history; Peter the Great cogitated plans to construct the city, risen from a swamp, modeled after those in Europe. St. Petersburg is touted as the Russian Venice with its palace-lined waterways. We will be staying at a hotel located on the Baltic Sea (brrr!). On our to see list are the following attractions:
* Hermitage Museum - Precious art treasures housed in a palace once occupied by Russian Tsars.
* Peter and Paul Fortress - Originally built to defend St. Petersburg, the fortress eventually became a prison; Trotsky was imprisoned here for a time. Cannons fired from the fortress relayed the sex of the Tsars' children to anxious citizens.
* Petrodvorets - A series of palaces built by Peter the Great.
* Cathedrals - St. Petersburg boasts many beautiful cathedrals, and J and I plan to peek in all of them.
We are restive to travel for other reasons, too!
