We celebrated Matty's birthday this year a little early in order to take advantage of our visitor :) Though Matty has witnessed the birthdays and celebrations of other children, I'm not sure that he quite knew how to respond to his own; he's never before had a party or cake and seemed a bit unsure as to how to react to the attention. Last year, his birthday fell in between the two trips that J and I made to Russia to complete his adoption. Matty told us that children didn't get cakes or gifts on their birthdays (or Christmas, for that matter) at the orphanage.
He chose Diego decorations and asked for a Spiderman cake. I'm not sure that he understood that he was to make a wish when blew out the candles, but he did know how to eat the cake and open presents! He has had a wonderful time playing with his knight, Batman, Star Wars figures, and games; thank you to all of you who sent gifts (surely Emily Post could forgive me for passing along gratitude via a blog considering our circumstances).
Matty celebrated his birthday at school with cupcakes and games. He's still practicing telling everyone that he is now five, and he's made a point of saying how easy it is to show people his age using his hand ("It's just one hand, Mama!").
